Spelinsikt

Gambling addiction is a growing problem that affects both the individual's finances, mental health and relationships. Many people get stuck in destructive patterns and find it difficult to break them on their own. Our mission was to develop Spelinsikt, an app aimed at young adults that both raises awareness of the risks of gambling behavior and offers tools to support users on their journey towards a gambling-free life.
The goal was to create a digital solution that feels empathetic, safe and engaging and that can be used long-term to support the recovery process.

Challenge

How can we transform insights from the everyday lives of gambling addicts into a digital platform that:

  • engages and motivates the user

  • offers both practical tools and emotional support

  • is adaptable and available for different needs

My focus

  • Conducted surveys and research interviews, which provided important insights into the needs of the target group.

  • Participated in a meeting at the Swedish Association of Gambling Addiction in Stockholm to gather insights based on individuals' own gambling behaviors.

  • Contributed to problem formulation and the 5 W's methodology to structure user challenges.

  • Sketched wireframes and participated in idea generation (Crazy 8 and brainstorming).

  • Worked in Figma with the prototype and participated in user testing.

  • Contributed to the presentation of the solution.

Process and method

We used the Design Thinking process:

  • Empathize: Interviews, survey, observations via the Swedish Association of Gambling Addiction → insights into feelings, triggers and needs.

  • Define: Problem statement, SWOT and 5 W's to map causes and consequences.

  • Idea generation: Brainstorming, Crazy 8, paper sketches, prioritization of features.

  • Prototype: Flowchart, wireframes and high-fidelity prototype in Figma.

  • Test: Four user tests → iterations in navigation, buttons and accessibility features.

Results

We created Rize, an app that combines emotional support with practical tools:

  • Financial overview – circular graph to track savings goals and expenses.

  • Daily challenges – activities and rewards that help the user build new habits.

  • Chat function – anonymous support from relatives, other gambling addicts or support people.

  • Game block – ability to block game pages to reduce relapse.

  • Profile: individualization, progress overview and support for relatives.

  • Onboarding – personal introduction that creates a sense of hope, symbolized by a phoenix.

Lessons learned

I gained a deeper understanding of design with empathy and how digital solutions can support people in vulnerable situations. I developed my skills in interviewing, prototyping and user testing, and realized the importance of iterating based on real user experiences – especially in projects with high emotional impact.
